About the Hawks' Garden

bird bath.jpeg

We encourage children and families to get outside and into their gardens, with a focus on promoting the health of pollinators and beneficial insects.

The garden is run and maintained by the PTO, parent volunteers, students
and is led by our inspirational 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Swisher!

Take a tour

The garden, established by the PTO and 2nd grade teacher Ms Swisher in 2016, is a 2,000-square-foot haven for learning, growing, and connecting with nature.

Designed to be ADA-compliant and pollinator-friendly, it’s bursting with life — from galvanized tubs and wine barrels brimming with vegetables, herbs, and fruits, to vibrant flowers like borage, nasturtiums, and sunflowers that invite pollinators to visit.

California native plants, wildflowers, and a dedicated milkweed bed provide essential habitats, while fruit trees such as fig, lemon, and pomegranate add a delicious touch.

An Outdoor Classroom

This thriving garden is a true outdoor classroom, inspiring students to discover the wonders of the natural world.

Students regularly visit to observe and carry out nature journaling, explore ecology, and enjoy the produce they’ve helped grow, fostering a deep connection to nature and sustainable practices.

New for 2024/5, our Garden Educator, Jordan Garrett, is on site weekly to host classes throughout the year, giving access to every student in the school.

Students will learn various topics at each session such as scientific nature journaling, seed investigation and collecting, parts of a plant identification, native plant identification and bulb education. In the spring, students will learn about insect life cycles. Students also learn about ecology and what elements make up a habitat garden.

The garden curriculum will give students 'place based' learning opportunities in subjects such as math, science, writing and art.
