Safe Routes to School

The mission of Safe Routes to Schools is to increase the number of children walking and biking to school. The Safe Routes to School initiative integrates health, fitness, traffic relief, environmental awareness, and safety all under one program. Neil Cummins partners with Safe Routes to create a healthy lifestyle for children—and a safer and cleaner environment for everyone.

Walk and Roll Wednesdays

Typically, the first Wednesday of the month is Walk and Roll to school day. This is where students of Neil Cummins Elementary are encouraged to walk, bike, scoot, carpool or take public transit to school. On these Walk and Roll to School days there are Neil Cummins parents tabling (Kinder & Gym gates), encouraging children to walk and roll to school. Below are the Walk and Roll table dates for the 2025-2026 school year.

Bike Trains and Walking Buses

What is a bike train and walking bus? The best way to get kids excited to walk and roll to school is by getting their friends to do it with them. Gather people in your neighborhood or surrounding neighborhoods to start a bike train (where you all ride together) and/or a walking bus (where you all walk together).

Neil Cummins Elementary encourages all families to actively participate in our nationally-recognized Safe Routes to School program, a neighborhood-focused initiative to advocate green travel alternatives and address traffic safety at our schools.
How to create a bike train or walking bus

Step 1:

Start a text chain or What’s App group to communicate your walk and roll details. Put people you know on the group and have the first message encouraging others to add people in and around the neighborhood.

Step 2:
Send out texts 3 days beforehand with details about the upcoming walk and roll:
  • Starting location point is

  • Time you will be meeting keep in mind this might need to differ for walkers vs. rollers).

  • Route you will be taking so people can be picked up along the way.

  • Find existing routes in our neighborhood zones and meet ups section.

Step 3:

Send out a text the night before to get people excited! Recap the information in step 2.

Step 4:
Make it fun!
  • Make a fun playlist for the ride/walk to school.

  • Encourage everyone to dress in a theme (whatever the walk and roll theme is that month).
