Thanks to our amazing Art teacher, Ms McKee, fifth grade students learned all about the holiday Dia de los Muertos while creating these mixed media butterflies. Perfect timing since we have lots of monarch caterpillars in the garden right now.
Students started by creating their own wing designs and had the choice to use watercolor, colored pencils or markers and water or a combination of any of these.
Students then used model magic air dry clay, pipe cleaners and markers to create the body for their butterfly. Students then added all elements together on black backgrounds.
The last step for this project was to dedicate their butterfly to someone who is no longer alive.
Aren't they beautiful?!
