Thirteen tiny striped guests have made themselves at home in our school garden, munching happily on milkweed and astonishing everyone who spots them. What a perfect time, since Fifth grade are also displaying their butterfly art in the front office this month.
Monarch caterpillars are a vivid reminder of how alive and dynamic our little habitat truly is. Over the next couple of weeks, each one will transform into a jade-green chrysalis, beginning one of nature’s most extraordinary makeovers. If all goes well, brilliant orange-and-black wings will unfold right here on campus.
Once they take to the air, their journey continues: these fragile travelers will head toward warmer regions, following an ancient route that helps their species survive the colder months.
Meet each one here, individually photographed for you. Spot the difference!
