A few classes had an extra special insect lesson this month, where they learned about the parts of an insect through hands-on discovery.

The project introduced young learners to scientific observation and discovery through hands-on use of microscopes in the classroom.

We asked students what they knew, and what they wanted to know, before we started the lesson to better understand what they came to learn after our lesson.

The student scientists practiced drawing insects in their nature journals, focusing on the specific parts and labeling their detailed creations.

Then, they were able to closely observe milkweed beetles under microscopes, thanks to the Entomology Fund materials.

Our students were so excited to get to observe the live bugs under the microscopes and apply their knowledge to this experiential activity.

These new microscopes are the result of a grant we obtained from the Entomological Fund of America with which we purchased 12 digital microscopes. The grant was awarded to develop an 'Insect Observation Toolkit' to inspire enthusiasm and educate students on the importance of protecting essential insect species through hands-on investigation.

We will be running this class again with other grades throughout the year.
