Our March adventure of exploring seeds and planting their own cups for root exploration has been nothing short of delightful!

Seed Study Month comes to a close with Kindergarten planting their own Root View Cups. Having seen everyone else come home with one, we didn't want to disappoint!

The lesson began with a book reading of 'I'm A Seed' by Jean Marzollo, a beautiful story about two seeds, one a marigold and the other a pumpkin, compare what is happening to them as they grow into maturity.

The Magic of Seed Dissection

During dissection, children learned about seed parts such as cotyledons and embryos, gaining insight into how these tiny seeds contain everything necessary for growth.

By engaging with seeds up close, children not only ignite their interest but also lay a solid foundation for future scientific learning.

Planting in Root View Cups

We then transitioned to the garden where the students were able to plant their own Radish seed, Bean, and Pea in their own transparent cup - we call these Root View Cups as the bean is place right against the side so they can view the growth from the outside. The paper guard on the outside blocks the sunlight as roots like their surroundings to be dark. They can easily pull the cup out from the paper to see the roots growing.

Looking after their plants offers an excellent opportunity for children to learn about care and patience. In fact, studies show that spending as little as 30 minutes a week gardening can significantly improve children’s emotional well-being and increase their connection to nature.

These transparent cups allow young gardeners to witness the growth process firsthand. They can interactively observe roots and shoots developing right before their eyes.
