It’s a thrilling time in our backyard! A male and female bluebird have officially chosen our nesting box as their home. Earlier this season, NC dad Peyton Williams, helped predator-proof our boxes and his hard work has paid off!

The Nesting Ritual
Bluebirds are celebrated for their bright colors and sweet songs, but their nesting process is equally fascinating. In the wild, they typically select cavities or hollows to lay their eggs, making our nesting box an appealing choice. The male bluebird plays a crucial role in attracting a mate. He sings and displays his vibrant colors to catch a female's attention. Once they form a bond, they work as a team to build their nest. They use grass, twigs, feathers, and even bits of plastic to create a warm and cozy environment for their future chicks.
Watching this captivating process is a joy. Different classes have been observing the mama bluebird diligently arranging her nest materials, picking up soft feathers with her beak, and fitting them perfectly into place. It's heartwarming to witness her dedication to creating a safe space for her young.

What's fascinating is their ability to thrive even in urban settings. Studies show that bluebirds can adapt well to suburban backyards, taking advantage of the nesting boxes provided by eager bird lovers. By offering these safe havens, we not only help protect them but also bring the beauty of nature closer to our homes.
The Egg Sitting Period
Now the excitement intensifies! After Mama bluebird lays her eggs, which typically number between 2 to 6 in a clutch, the next crucial phase of incubation begins. Mama bluebird will sit on her eggs for about 12 to 14 days, keeping them warm and safe from harm. During this time, she fiercely protects her clutch.
The partnership between Mama and Papa bluebird is heartwarming. While Mama incubates the eggs, Papa diligently provides her with food and keeps a watchful eye on the area, alert for any potential dangers. This teamwork is essential for the survival of their future little ones, showcasing how nature thrives on collaboration.
