One of our favorite visitors to our school garden is the Western Bluebird. We frequently see them enjoying the bird bath and foraging for treats, or making use of one of the four nesting boxes that were installed, and used, last year. This week Peyton Williams, one of our parent volunteers, lent a helping hand adjusting the height of our bluebird nesting boxes and installing predator guards beneath them.
This small but impactful project will help protect these beautiful birds and support their nesting success in our school habitat.
Why does this matter?
1️⃣ Better Protection from Predators Raising the boxes to the proper height and adding predator guards helps keep eggs and baby birds safe from common threats like raccoons and snakes. With fewer disturbances, bluebird parents can focus on raising their young without constant danger.
2️⃣ Encourages Successful Nesting Bluebirds are particular about where they nest. By ensuring the boxes are at an ideal height, we make them more attractive to bluebird families, increasing the chances of a successful brood and supporting our local bird population.
A huge thank you to Peyton for helping make our garden a welcoming and safe space for wildlife!
Keep an eye out for bluebirds visiting their newly improved homes this spring 🪺
