March in the Garden

The Hawks garden was revitalized in March, as students began garden classes again for the spring. Classes were welcomed back by garden educators Natalie and Sophie to continue their outdoor education. Students went over the garden agreements before jumping right into new material.

Kindergarteners, 1st, and 2nd graders explored the parts of trees and the trees in our school garden. They went over the functions of roots, trunks, branches, and leaves, and practiced scientific drawing by drawing a tree in the garden.

Third, fourth, and fifth graders catalogued the biodiversity of the school garden in their nature journals, by documenting either the trees, flowers, or insects that they could find. They practiced careful observation and detailed nature journaling habits, like organizing and labeling their drawings. Some of these classes also started seeding for the spring season, planting vegetable seeds for tomatoes and cucumbers.

Students in garden recess got to taste garden goodies like lemons from the lemon tree and radishes grown in the soil. They helped plant new seeds in milk jug “greenhouses” and explored the new flowers blooming all over the space.
