The Hawks’ Garden has been filled with sunshine and exploration this month.

Students enjoyed getting to know each other, their teacher, and their outdoor classroom. The vegetables harvested in the garden were plentiful and the flowers blooming attracted pollinators of all kinds. Students got their hands dirty treasure-hunting for potatoes and searching for seeds. Each class went over our garden agreements, and demonstrated being safe, responsible, and respectful in the outdoor classroom.

The Kindergarteners explored the garden with curiosity and wonder. Their first visits to the garden were filled with practicing sneaky fox feet, noticing the plentiful monarch butterflies, and learning new garden yoga poses.

Our first and second graders were welcomed back by hummingbirds and milkweed beetles, and eagerly noticed all of the critters crawling or flying around the garden. They practiced scientific drawing in their nature journals, drawing interesting leaves and vegetables.

The third, fourth, and fifth graders opened their nature journals with familiarity. Observing different garden goods, like zucchinis, tomatoes, and garlic, they noticed and recorded colors, patterns, shapes, and questions. The older Hawks' gardeners had no hesitations in grabbing a lawn chair, sitting back and relaxing by the bubbling bird bath while completing their drawing assignments.
